Glossary
Anti-pill - An expression used to describe the wear resistance of fleece. Fibres in low-quality fleece tend to twist together, resulting in an uneven and worn look. Anti-pill fleece is specially woven to prevent this from happening.
Breathable - (of clothes or material) admitting air to the skin and allowing sweat to evaporate.
Cadcut - computerised cutting system for vinyl and flock letters, numbers etc.
Cotton - a natural fabric made from the soft white fibrous substance that surrounds the seeds of a tropical and subtropical plant and is used as textile fibre and thread for sewing.
Embroidery - the art of decorating (cloth) by sewing patterns on it with coloured thread.
Fleece - a soft warm fabric with a texture similar to sheep’s wool. Polar fleece (also known as microfleece), usually referred to simply as “fleece,” is a soft napped insulating synthetic fabric made from Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or other synthetic fibres. It weighs a fraction of the lightest available woolens and is very light, soft and easy to wash. Fleece is a soft, lightweight, warm and comfortable fabric.
Flock - a printing technique perfect for text or clipart. Printing with flock is appropriate for 1. 2. or 3 colours. Colours are solid, strong and vibrant. Flock is a soft and pliable material yet extremely strong and durable resembling velvet. Colours remain vibrant after numerous washes.
Font - In typography, a font (also fount) is traditionally defined as a quantity of sorts composing a complete character set, size and style of a particular typeface. After the introduction of computer fonts based on fully scalable outlines, a broader definition evolved. Font is no longer size-specific, but still refers to a single style. Bulmer regular, Bulmer italic, Bulmer bold and Bulmer bold italic are four fonts, but one typeface. However, the term font is also often used as a synonym for typeface.
Lining - an additional layer of different material attached to the inside of a garment to make it warmer or hang better.
Microfibre - A synthetic fibre that is extremely soft, lightweight, breathable, durable and ultra-fine.. In fact, microfibres are two times finer than silk and one hundred times finer than a human hair.
Piqué - a sturdy fabric, typically cotton, woven in a strongly ribbed or raised pattern.
Polyester - a crease resistant man-made fabric made from polyester fibre - a synthetic resin in which the polymer units are linked by ester groups, used chiefly to make synthetic textile fibres.
Preshrunk - A term used to describe fabrics or garments, especially T-shirts, that have received preshrinking treatment. This special treatment is often performed on cotton to prevent it from additional shrinkage when washed.
Reactive dyed - Fibre reactive dye is the most permanent of all dye types. Unlike other dyes, it actually forms a covalent bond with the cellulose or protein molecule. Once the bond is formed, what you have is one molecule, as the dye molecule has become an actual part of the cellulose fibre molecule. Garments dyed this way hold their colours even after frequent washing and the colours do not run.
Ringspun - Fibre, usually cotton, that is spun prior to knitting, so it’s finer, softer and more durable than ordinary cotton.
Sweatshirt - a loose, heavy shirt, typically made of cotton, worn when exercising or as leisurewear.
Vinyl - a printing technique where the design is cut from a coloured foil and then pressed onto the garment under high heat. Features include: Vibrant colors - the printed colors have a slight shine to them and contrast extremely well with fabric. Longevity and durability - tests have shown that the form and colour of vinyl print barely changes after 100s of washes. It is made of a flexible and resilient material - even thin lines do not break.
